Manchester is a City steeped in history. From riotous political dissent and glorious architecture to eccie-fuelled raves (and Shaun Ryder's new teeth), our city has seen it all. In the ultimate culmination of arts, culture and education, the team at Manchester Histories Festival have arrived to serve you a big 'ol slice of Mancunian pie - warts and all - with events that span the ages. Here's our cream-of-the-crop selection.

We've all heard from the musicians. Happy Mondays, New Order, The Smiths, New Order Without Hooky - but what of the fans themselves? 2 years in the making, this incredible event maps out Manchester's infamous rave, music and dance scenes from the most important perspective of all, with plenty of input from a panel of professors from Manchester Metropolitan University. We're unsure if they're professors of rave, but here's hoping.

Pretty much what it says on the tin - take a trip through the history of the oft-overlooked city-next-door, kicking off with the Working Class Movements Library and snaking all over Chapel Street until you reach the People's History Museum. Perfect for Salfordians everywhere, native or otherwise!

In this unique archive film event, Journalistic Novice Bob Dickinson introduces a series of documentaries compiled by the now-defunct Worker's Film Association, previously based in Hulme. Expect a wealth of material based around people's history, from life in Manchester's South Asian and Afro-Caribbean communities to Pete Shelley discussing punk.

Of course, it's not all punk and games: this talk focuses on the darker side of Manchester - something we still see not in the rising numbers of homelessness and food banks. This free talk, led by Dean Kirby, focuses on the lives of ordinary Mancunians in the wake of the industrial revolution: when dangerously cramped housing, deadly disease and cut-throat gang violence were the norm.
