Ferocious, powerful, and revelling in a fiery mix of pop and DIY-punk sound, Brighton-based trio DREAM WIFE recently dominated the support slot of THE VACCINES' headline show at Manchester's Academy. Following the release of their empowering self-titled debut, the band have already made considerable waves - both in the booming DIY riot-grrrl scene and beyond. We grabbed a few minutes with lead singer Rakel Mjöll.

Q: Who would be YOUR Dream Wife (sorry for the awful question, we couldn’t resist)? A: A Dream Wife doesn't exist. She never has. Never will.
Q: Who are your top three musical influences?
A: Well if it's only three - Madonna (of course), the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bowie.
Q: Do you feel that the current music industry – with the increased exposure of DIY culture – is evolving beyond its patriarchal roots to become a more equal space? A: We all live in our own bubble. For us, it's the exciting creative scene happening now in London, where gender isn't an issue within creativity. But once you step out of your bubble, you see there's a whole lot of work to be done.
Q: Who are your three favourite UK-based music acts right now? A: We're on tour with the Vaccines right now - lovely guys, great songwriting and amazing live. Our mates The Magic Gang just released an incredible debut, well worth checking out. Whenyoung were also supporting us on our headline tour last month - they're our new faves!
Q: Have you played in Manchester before? What are your opinions on the rainy city?
A: Yes, it's one of the best cities with the best crowds. They go wild - love it.
Q: On to your debut LP – you’ve got some raging themes on the album, particularly among tracks like F.U.U & Fire – what inspired them?
A: We write what we know, and well we're women that have had different experience in this life. So a lot of the themes is looking back and understanding a moment, a feeling, a happening. F.U.U. is about letting out healthy aggression, which we all need - fire is about embracing a moment of connection.
Q: Describe your music in one sentence – make it a good’un! A: Rock with pop sensibility.
Q: Finally - how does it feel to be embarking on such a big tour, especially alongside the likes of Garbage, The Vaccines & the Kills?
A: You only got one debut album, so we're definItely making the most of it! It's great, we'll be on tour pretty much all year. What a dream. Playing with your idols, you learn so much!
